Entry Requirements

Entry

For applicants studying a science subject (e.g. Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or Geography) at A level: a minimum of 160 UCAS points in 2 subjects at A2 Level (excluding General Studies), to include a grade C in a science subject

For applicants not studying a science subject at A level: a minimum of 200 UCAS points in 2 subjects at A2 Level (excluding General Studies) and GCSE double science at Grade C or above

For applicants studying an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science you must pass 60 credits, at least 45 of which are at Level 3, of which 18 Level 3 credits must be in Science at 'merit' or 'distinction' credits

All applicants should have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above or Key Skills Communication and Application of Number at Level 2

 

Language entry requirements :

The University accepts the following minimum English language standards for entry to its degree courses.

You must have at least one of the following standards in English to enter a degree or diploma course:

An IELTS score of 6.0, or a TOEFL score of 550 (or 213 for the computer-based test)

Pearson PTE Academic score of 54

A pass in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) examination

A pass in the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) examination

GCSE/GCE O Level grade C or equivalent British-based examination

For selected countries, a good pass in English in the final year of secondary school (this being the equivalent of year 13 in England and Wales), or

Any other equivalent qualification recognised by the British Council (as listed in the British Council NARIC Guide) or an equivalent body

For entry to the BA (Hons) English Language and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programmes, you will need a score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, since this is a special award which includes an international qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Curriculum

Content

Year 1

Through a variety of learning activities, year 1 provides an exciting introduction to the broad scope of environmental health including human health, the natural environment and health and safety. You will also develop key skills for effective study throughout your course such as IT, laboratory and field work and report writing skills.

Year 2

You will study key areas of environmental health such as housing, food microbiology and biochemistry and environmental pollution including the legal framework and interventions to protect public health. Through practical classes and field work activities you will learn about assessment of noise, food and water quality and health and safety.

Placement Year

There is an optional but strongly recommended placement year to develop practical experience of the environmental health profession and may involve working in local authorities and/or the private sector.

Final year

Whilst studying environmental protection, food safety and health promotion, you will develop a multi-disciplinary approach required for environmental health practice through case studies, problem solving exercises and inspection of premises. During this year you have opportunity to undertake an independent research project in an area of interest.
